Evonik Energy Services GmbH (formerly STEAG encotec GmbH) is a 100 % subsidiary of Evonik Steag GmbH and provides comprehensive services covering all aspects of thermal energy generation. Among those tasks are planning, new construction, and modernization of all types of fossil-fuel fired power plants and for nuclear facilities as well as services to support operation and maintenance management, including IT solutions to optimize processes and costs. Evonik Energy Services currently employs a staff of more than 700, mainly engineers, scientists and technicians. Subsequently you will find more about our business areas and international activities. From about 1965 the Energy Technologies Division assumed responsibility for the planning and the owners end of construction work on the Evonik power plants – Lünen, Voerde, Bergkamen, Walsum and Herne – in connection with the restructuring of the capacities of pithead power stations to create state-of-the-art large-scale units. Consequent tasks have been addressed in planning and implementation of all necessary retrofitting activities for air pollution control (FGD, DeNOx) at the Evonik plants in the 1980s and 1990s. Based on the extensive development work, special – also proprietary – technical and economic know-how was acquired, which has since been applied for Evonik’s fleet as well as for external power generators, both at home and abroad. In conjunction with the operating experience of Evonik Steag GmbH, since about 1970 the services of Energy Technologies have been successfully offered to the market without interruption. All told, the Energy Technologies Division has participated in the planning and building of power plants (including infrastructure) with a total capacity of more than 200,000 MW in over 50 countries. In the waste-to-energy field, it has realized plants like the RZR Herten waste incineration plant and the Lauta thermal waste treatment facility. Within the Evonik Steag GmbH, the Business Unit “Energy” of Evonik Industries, the Energy Technologies Division provides the necessary special know-how for the Evonik Steag power plants in Germany and abroad and handles the required technical project management for hard coal-fired power plant projects like Iskenderun, Mindanao, Walsum 10 and Herne 5 or for the refinery power plants Leuna and Cologne-Godorf. To external customers, the Energy Technologies Division offers its special know-how and project management skills in the fields of process engineering (also comprising flue gas cleaning and environmental protection technology, thermal waste treatment and water treatment technology), electrical engineering and I&C technology, and civil engineering. External work focuses on owner’s support in the construction of new plants, e.g., combined cycle plants for Stadtwerke (municipal utilities) Duisburg and Wuppertal; planning and support for the implementation of advanced control room designs for power plants and energy installations, e.g., for Stadtwerke Düsseldorf and for the Cologne-Godorf Shell Refinery; planning and handling of FGD/DeNOx system retrofitting, e.g., in West Burton (UK) and Pego (Portugal); as well as construction engineering and plant engineering services for industrial customers, e.g., the technical development of the infrastructure of a major industrial facility in Greifswald, Germany. Evonik Energy Services acts as a centre of power engineering competence within the Evonik Steag. The key points of this assignment of Evonik Energy Services are: • Evonik Energy Services represents Evonik Steag GmbH at conferences and in working panels of VGB (the European technical association of large power plant operators). • Evonik Energy Services is responsible for know-how transfer between the Evonik power plants. • A comprehensive staff exchange program under which Evonik Energy Services engineers take part in power plant inspections, including planning, and engineers from the power plants participate in the international projects of Evonik Energy Services. • Evonik Energy Services is co-responsible for ensuring the high availability rate of the Evonik power plants and concurrently for minimizing the cost of operation and maintenance. This wide-ranging cooperation ensures its strong market position as “advisors and planners with operating experience” to the best advantage of its customers. The core business of Evonik Steag GmbH covers the entire spectrum of plant management, from fuel procurement through the operation and maintenance of power plants to the sale of electricity, heat and steam. Utilizing the long-standing and wide-ranging experience of the Power Generation division of Evonik Steag GmbH, Evonik Energy Services offers its national and international customers the following services: •Feasibility studies •Conceptual design, economic appraisals •Conceptual and basic engineering •Procurement, including preparation of bid specifications, bid evaluation and negotiation as well as contract awarding •Licensing and permitting procedure management •Checking of manufacturers’ engineering documents, source surveillance •Project management, inspections, expediting and implementation, progress and cost control •Site management •Coordination of commissioning and trial operation •Staff training; training of operating, maintenance and administrative personnel •Testing Services for plant acceptance and optimization •Operation and maintenance of clients plants •Provision of operation and maintenance management systems for power plants and plant complexes to ensure cost-optimized power generation while safeguarding maximum plant availability
