Over the last six years, Ghana has taken commendable steps to position itself as an automotive hub in West Africa through the implementation of the Ghana Automotive Development Policy. As the country deepens its footprint in vehicle assembly and broader industrialization, the demand for resilient, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions continues to rise. Renewable energy not only helps reduce carbon emissions but directly supports production efficiency, cost control, and competitiveness.

Japan Motors Trading Company Ltd, one of Ghana’s leading automotive firms representing renowned brands such as Nissan, Foton, Yamaha, and Geely, operates a state-of-the-art assembly plant in Tema, where it assembles Nissan, Foton, Geely, and Peugeot vehicles. As part of its sustainability strategy, the company has taken a major step to integrate solar energy systems across all its facilities in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale. “Each of the seven Japan Motors sites now benefits from a fully operational solar energy system that is both reliable and sustainable,” explains Mr. Mohammed Byrouthy,Assistant Managing Director at Japan Motors Trading Company Ltd.

The company partnered with BeBa Africa GmbH to implement 7 grid-tied rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across its facilities with a total capacity of 490 kWp. “BeBa Africa executed the installation with remarkable efficiency and professionalism. The entire project was completed within the agreed timeline, and the results have exceeded our expectations,” Mr. Byrouthy adds. BeBa Africa GmbH is a renowned German renewable energy solutions provider with a 20-year track record in engineering, construction and operation of solar power plants, with over 4 MWp installed in Ghana.

The systems commissioned on 11 April 2025 are expected to supply an average of 35-40% of the company’s electricity demand, significantly lowering energy costs and ensuring long-term savings. Additionally, the installations will result in up to 300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided annually, underlining Japan Motors' commitment to cleaner, more sustainable production.

Support by the German Energy Solutions Initiative

The Project Development Programme (PDP) of the German Energy Solutions Initiative played a critical role in the realization of this project. Michael Ball, Managing Director at BeBa Africa GmbH, explains the benefits of working with PDP: “PDP’s in-depth technical and economic assessment provided Japan Motors with a solid foundation to make informed decisions about their sustainability strategy. It clarified their energy requirements, highlighted the practical aspects of solar integration, and illustrated the cost-saving potential.” The team further supported Japan Motors during the project tendering process through introduction to high-quality German energy solutions providers.

The PDP team through working relationship with stakeholders continues to extend the project development support services to energy-intensive businesses in the commercial and industrial sectors in Ghana. Ghana’s evolving industrial landscape continues to demonstrate how renewable energy is becoming a critical tool for improving operational efficiency, managing energy costs, and securing long-term business resilience.
