German fuel cell technology reliably supplies off-grid infrastructure in Canada with electricity

Developed by NEW ENERDAY GmbH (formerly Sunfire Fuel Cells GmbH) in collaboration with Canadian partner Ensol Systems Inc., the project successfully powers critical infrastructure in British Columbia and Alberta. One system ensures year-round energy supply to a fire watch tower’s radio station at an altitude of 2,473 meters, while another enables continuous operation of an autonomous drone station in northern Alberta—providing a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional inspection flights.

Both installations rely on the Remote 400 high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which operates efficiently even in extreme cold using widely available propane. These solutions enhance reliability, reduce emissions, and offer sustainable energy independence for off-grid infrastructure such as telecommunications, railway networks, and pipeline monitoring.

With the RES programme, the German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK) supports German companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors enter new markets. Within the framework of the programme, reference plants are installed and marketed with the support of the German Energy Agency (dena). Information and training activities help ensure a sustainable market entry and demonstrate the quality of climate-friendly technologies made in Germany.
